Barcode Superstore Printer Guide
The difference between Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer technologies
Direct thermal is suitable for short term labelling applications because over time direct thermal labels will deteriorate and yellow (like old fashioned fax paper) and if scratched they will mark meaning they are not suitable for long term barcode label applications.
With direct thermal labels there is a chemical present within the label that is brought out by the heat of the print head.
Thermal transfer technology uses a film ribbon in addition to a standard paper label. The printer burns an image onto the face of the label from the ribbon. There are different ribbon specifications for different materials i.e. paper or synthetic labels.
All of our Thermal Transfer printer can be used in "direct thermal mode" i.e. without a ribbon - if you are using direct thermal labels.
Usage of label printers in industry include:
- Product labels
- Shipping/pallet labels
- Pallet labels
- Rating labels
- Warehouse racking labels
- Special materials for high and low temperature applications
- Chemical resistant labels
- Security labelling
- Asset labels
All of these label applications can be fulfilled by Barcode Superstore - we have extensive experience in specialist labelling applications call us on 0800 169 1972 or find out more by clicking here
More information about barcode printers
Barcode printers typically come in fixed sizes of 2 inches, 4 inches, 6 inches or 8 inches wide.
Most barcode printers are not supplied with network abilities as standard - optional ethernet (LAN network card) is an option on most of the printers in our range.
Other options available on some of our printers are:
Cutter to cut material at set intervals to the customer's requirement
Peel mechanism to peel away backing paper and present the label to be applied straight away.
Rewind options to rewind backing paper only and full rewinds to wind rolls of printed labels
Wireless options for RF communications
Printer DPI options
As standard, most of our printers are 200 dpi. We also offer 300 and 600 dpi options. These are useful when printing very small labels, labels which contain a lot of data or labels with graphical images.
